Frequently Asked Questions

No. Fruits and plants are placed on separate permit applications. Plants must use a plant import permit application. Fruits must use a fruit and vegetable import permit application.

Applications are typically processed within a minimum of two (2) business days, excluding holidays. The permit processing times for plant, plant product and/ or other regulated articles may vary. Importers are strongly advised that some consignments may require a pest risks assessment (PRA) which may result in a longer processing time.

Yes. A permit for personal use items is available. The application must provide all of the relevant required documents. e.g. approved permit, phytosanitary OR, Health and Food Safety certificate, etc…

The permit is still valid if it has not been used and its validity has not expired.

The permit may only be used for one consignment.

Yes. Customs Duty and VAT are mandatory wherever applicable.

Yes. A permit to import goods is required for personal use, including special events such as weddings, cookouts and funerals. Supporting documentation verifying the event will be required.

The import permit should be requested and received prior to the purchase of your goods.

No. Payments for permits must be made at the time of the application submission.

A business license is typically required to import goods. Exceptions may be made for personal use and for special events

No. Plants or plant products must be purchased from a certified nursery that must supply the certified phytosanitary certificate before importing goods to The Bahamas.
